The term “nanotechnology” was not used until 1974, when Norio Taniguchi, a researcher at the University of Tokyo, used it to refer to the ability to engineer materials precisely at the nanometer level.
Nanotechnology can be defined as the science and engineering involved in the design, synthesis, characterization and application of materials and devices whose smallest functional organization in at least one dimension is on the nanometer scale (one-billionth of a meter) .
Environmental researchers are investigating the use of engineered nanoscale materials (engineered nanomaterials for short) to purify or desalinate water, to improve energy efficiency, or to clean up hazardous wastes. |
